I’d encourage you to email support@harvestapp.com if you’re running into the same problem. They told me “we’ve deployed a fix for our invoicing numbers. If you use the format 2011-xx, Harvest should automatically detect that you’re using year-based numbering and increment the next number as you would expect.” — presumably that was a system-wide fix and not just for my account :)

For those of you following along at home, I will admit that I went ballistic on the Harvest Support team over email when I discovered this problem, and despite my ill-advised tantrums, they actually came through for me in the end and rolled out a quick fix that specifically addresses and detects year-based invoice numbering. By addressing my complaint quickly and finding a fix instead of just placating me with a continued chant of “maybe in the future”, they saved me from having to remember to manually change the invoice number on 200+ invoices over the next 12 months. I’d already screwed up a half dozen invoices this week alone and the problem would’ve only gotten worse with 200+ clients to go.

So thank you, Harvest Team, for allowing me to vent and throw things and take my frustrations out on all the innocents, while you went ahead and figured out how to fix it anyway :)

My invoice numbers are prefaced with the year (i.e. 2012-xxxx) and mine still say 2011-xxxx. I thought manually changing my first invoice this morning to 2012-xxx1 would trigger the sequential nature of it to make the one after that 2012-xxx2, but instead it reverted back to the next in the 2011-xxxx sequence. I’ll need Estimate numbers to change as well.

I’ve looked through Invoice > configure and account settings and can’t find any reference to invoice numbers. Please advise ASAP. Thanks!

+1. Entering payments is a drag because after you record the payment, it doesn’t even redirect you back to the main invoice listing page, it just bounces you back to the invoice you just recorded the payment in, requiring extra clicks to go back to the main invoices page, in order to record a payment in a different invoice next.

Ditto. Can we have an update? If you’re not planning to provide any customization options, just tell us now so we can stop hoping for it. At the very least, the ability to have add an HTML signature in the invoice and thank you message email would go a long way and we can’t even currently do that! That’s a branding inconsistency that my clients actually notice and comment on regularly – every other email they receive from me has a nice, clean HTML signature with links and images in it, but the emails they get form me via Harvest have none of that. It reflects badly on me as well as Harvest and prevents me from using Harvest to it’s full potential.

+1 for calendar integration. At the very least the ability to input time in a more user-friendly way within Harvest. Only being able to see notes for a single day at a time in the calendar day view or hours for no more than a week at a time (and without the details, which makes it kind of useless) is maddening when I’m inputting a few days of hours at a time (as often happens). Having to switch to a report just to get an overview of a given month is really inconvenient. Thanks.

You can do this on your own without any intervention from Harvest. Just add the CNAME record with your domain host. While I don’t do this for Harvest, I do it for Google apps, for example – I have gmail.mydomain.com redirect to http://mail.google.com/a/mydomain.com

+1 for notification please. While this is low on MY priority list, it’s on my list, nonetheless :) For the time being I’ve just been ignoring monthly budgets in Harvest and tracking them externally because a significant number of my clients have monthly budgets allotted for x number of hours and creating a new project for each of them every month is far more work than I am willing to do.

Thanks Samara. I knew that at some point but then forgot. Not sure timesheet approval alone is worth an additional $20-$30 to justify changing from Solo to Basic since I don’t believe there are any other features that distinguish those plans, but at least I know I’m not crazy :)

@Samara – for me it would work best at the person level, and as a report option to see an overview of what’s been billed to the client vs what’s been billed/paid to the subcontractor.

I have Harvest integrated with Google Apps and according to your handy video, I can send time sheet reminders via email and the time sheet widget is embedded in that email. But I can’t find any way to actually send the reminder to myself. It would be incredibly convenient to send myself a daily reminder and record my hours while I am already in Gmail. I don’t have any other active “people” right now to see if there’s a reminder option for them, but I would think I could remind myself just as I would remind other employees or subcontractors. Am I mistaken or am I blind?

+1 for notification, please. Several of my colleagues and sub-contractors are also using Harvest now (you’re welcome!) and I’d love to be able to “share” projects if possible, as well as – and perhaps more importantly, be able to have them submit invoices and time sheets seamlessly from their account to mine. If I add one of them as one of my “people” it should ties into their existing Harvest account when I assign them to projects, tasks, etc, and their invoices to me should tie into my own Harvest account (perhaps getting recorded as an expense?)

And another +1 for me. It’s a weak link in the Expenses area within Harvest. I can manually enter a line item with the category of “Goods” that I’ve created, and make the cost whatever I want to, but a list of commonly-invoiced products that I resell would be helpful, as would being able to track MY wholesale cost versus the retail markup the client is billed for.

I’d appreciate this feature as well. I work with contractors who I pay a specific rate, but the rate charged to the client isn’t always the same. So for me, I’d like to input the cost to me as well as the cost to the client. Let’s say I subcontract Joe Smith to perform services at a rate of $75/hour for a certain project. But the client is being charged $100/hour for that project. When I add Joe Smith as the “person” who is performing the work, I’m invoicing for $100/hour. But I’m only paying Joe $75/hour. So the $75 is a back-end expense for me, which I’d like to keep track of for overall budgeting purposes (and “profitability” reports), but the client only sees that they are billed $100/hour for the work Joe performed. When I look at Gross income vs Net income, I should see the $25/per hour difference as profit, not the full $100 the client is charged.

Currently, the only way I can handle this within Harvest is to add my “person” with the $100 rate and then I keep track outside of Harvest of what his/rate rate actually is (i.e. the rate he/she is charging ME, rather than what I am charging the client).

Glad you asked :) Having it work automatically would be preferable, of course. Via a checkbox, just like “include PDF invoice with email” option that’s already there.

The receipt is already uploaded and already exists within Harvest, so in my mind, when I invoice for expenses or time+expenses, the receipt I already uploaded when I created the expense (better yet, the actual expense report) should be emailed along with the PDF of the invoice itself. I do see that when I print an expense report for myself, the receipt copy is included. But the client has more use for that than I do. After all, I already have the receipt since I’m the one who incurred the original expense!

But if that’s not doable for some reason, the option to re-upload and attach from the “send invoice” screen would be fine too – not ideal, as it means I’d need to have a copy of that receipt I already uploaded handy, but that would still be preferable to my having to email it separately outside of Harvest.

Make sense?

When I include expenses with an invoice, the receipt I attached to the expense does not get included with the PDF? Am I missing something? I want the receipt included, of course, but it looks like I’d have to email it on my own, outside of Harvest, which is impractical.

I have over 50 clients and even more contacts and I often need to update a client company or contact with new address or phone #’s or email, or add a new contact to a client, etc.

Currently there’s no search or filter on the Client management page so I have to scroll through it and eyeball for the one I’m looking for alphabetically or I need to do a “find on page” from my browser to jump to where I want to be, neither of which is terribly convenient.

How about a search and/or quick-filter field for the Client Management page, please?

I’m not adding any extra spaces, but as far as I can tell, anything with more than 3 line items is pushing the Notes filed to the 2nd page, despite their still being plenty of room for it on the 1st page. There’s something weird on Harvest’s end that’s making the bottom margin too high I think – my “Notes” are only 3 lines in most cases – and they would definitely fit on the first page of these invoices with plenty of buffer at the bottom if the top and bottom margin were mirrored.

I just started using Harvet “officially” on Jan 1 and I noticed this issue as well. Most of my clients pay by check, so they open or download the PDF invoice and they don’t realize there’s a 2nd page since there’s plenty of white space on the first page, it wouldn’t occur to them that the “Notes” (which is where my payment terms/late fee advisories typically are) are on the 2nd page. Any update on a fix for this?
