Retainer for multiple projects, one client

Avatar

I have a client that I need a monthly retainer for, but I work on various projects throughout the month for them. How do I allow those projects to draw against the retainer? I can’t just draw it against a retainer project, because the client needs a report of my hours on each individual project and task.

Retainers can be created for either all projects for a client or on a per-project basis. I’m not exactly sure which you’d like to do, but when creating the first retainer for a client, you can choose to assign it to all projects for that client or just to a specific project.

Once a retainer has been created, then subsequent retainers must follow the same set up (all projects or per-project) until all retainers for that client are exhausted.

I don’t see how you can assign it to all projects for a client I guess is the issue then. When I go to create a retainer, I’m forced to pick one of their projects in the dropdown, which assigns the retainer to that project only.

I tried to create a project just called ‘Retainer Block’, and then though I could invoice and still draw from it, but that doesn’t work either.

  1. If no retainers have been applied to any projects yet, the last option in the list will be Apply To All Projects;
  1. Once a retainer has been applied to a project, that project is removed from the list along with the Apply to All option;
  1. If a retainer has already been applied to all projects, then the client will be removed from the list.

I hope that helps!

Okay, I deleted the retainer and started it again. Now I see the option for All Projects. Thanks for your help Scott.
