Move Data between Projects

Avatar

Is it possible to move time data etc that was stored in one project to another.

For example, we track a specific product research in one project then decide to develop that fully and expand by starting a new project specific to that new product.

If we could move the data there would be a complete history in one report?

I find that I need to do this, too, occasionally. It’s not an extremely common use case for me (because I’m careful to avoid situations where I’ll need to do it), but it’s filled with pain and suffering, every time I do need to do it :(

Hi @ace adventure scotland and @Jim Kring – Thanks for checking in! I’ve heard before that people would like a way to easily move data between projects, but this leaves us with a very vague picture of what people actually need. Do you want to move time data? Invoices? Budget information? Something else? How do you see this working when you’re in your workflow and you want to do XYZ to move the data between projects?

Thanks for any additional feedback you guys have!

Cheers,
Samara

Samara: By “data” I meant “time log entries”. The workflow is like this. For a variety of reasons we may find that all time entries by a user from DateA to DateB on ProjectX need to be moved to ProjectY, or have their task changed from Task1 to Task2. What I’d like to be able to do is create a Detailed Time Report and then adjust the Project and/or Tasks of all the time entries (or perhaps selected time entries) in a very simple way.

For example, we might decide, after the fact, that what a user was working on all last week was not “Support” (task), but “Sales”. Or, we realize that the work was for “Widget Tester” (project), not “Widget Builder”.

Right now, the only way to fix this problem is by manually editing each time log entry in the Daily Timesheet editor.

Hi @Jim –

Thanks for the feedback! We’re playing around with the idea of making reports editable; however, we aren’t sure we want to make it so there are two separate ways to edit time (in Reports and in Time). We had thought about just linking Detailed Time reports to time entries, so it’s easier to jump back and forth. This does present a good case, though, for why we should consider making time editable from two parts of Harvest, and it gives us another perspective from which to approach the problem. Thanks, as always, for taking the time to chat!

Hi Samara and Jim,

I think this is a great post that really reflects a common workflow that businesses step through – moving a user’s entries from ProjectX to ProjectY.

A couple days ago, I had to spend about 6 hours to manually move 200 hours worth of entries from one project to another. If you’ve found a better way in the past year, I would love to hear what it is.

Conversely, maybe the simplest solution that your Harvest Product Manager could consider would be to enhance Harvest so that when one “Duplicates” a project, that action duplicates the entries as well. With this action, one could delete entries from a project as oppose to moving them.

For instance, if ProjectX has 100 hours worth of entries and a new project, ProjectY, needs to contain 30 hours of ProjectX. If one were to duplicate ProjectX and the entries carried over, rename it ProjectY, it would be faster to manually delete 70 hours worth of entries as oppose to moving 30 hours.

Right now it takes about 5 steps to manually move entries vs 2 steps to delete an entry.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for reading.
Alex
