Timesheet Display Skins

Avatar

I opened my Harvest timesheet today and was horrified to see that the design, layout and function had completely changed. This is simply too much, too fast and I cannot seem to find any benefit in the new design. In my opinion it is much more awkward and difficult to create and edit entries. These new design actually makes Harvest less user friendly.

I think it would be a wise and valuable decision to offer a feature that allows users to choose what timesheet skin they prefer. I simply can’t believe I am the only one deeply discouraged by the new design of the timesheet that would like access to their old timesheet design.

Please Help!!

In new skin, form for adding entry has changed. Description of entry is now textarea (instead of simple test input).

Textarea is much less user-friendly (in my opinion), because simple input field remember previously entered data.

So for example, if I work for some task every Monday, I have to enter description on every Monday :/ In old skin, I fill in only few first letters and than hit “down arrow” and “enter”.

I too, would rather see text fields rather than textareas used for notes. Auto-complete is nice, but the ability to hit return to submit the time is crucial.

I’m not apposed to the updates because it’s “change”, but because the usability has suffered.

On top of data entry issues, it’s much harder to scan existing entries in a given day. The increased whitespace means more screen needs to be scanned, and the format of each entry does not in any way lend itself to easy reading.

Thanks for working hard and for all the continual improvement, even if some areas still need work. ;)

I haven’t had time to form an opinion on the impact of the changes yet, except that I definitely miss the visual cue of the little spinning timer. That may sound trivial, but having that little running clock makes it quick and easy for me to look at my timesheet and see which item I am timing at a given moment. The “start” and “stop” buttons just look too similar to distinguish them with a quick glance.Otherwise, I’m going to reserve judgement on the changes until I’ve had a chance to try them out for a day or two.
Thanks for everything you guys do. Harvest is a wonderful program and I appreciate your efforts to keep it current and functional. :-)

I’m going to skip my comments on the actual changes; it suffices to say that I’m not a big fan.

Although I’m sure there are several arguments why the new interface is better, I would like to see some kind of option that allows users to bring back the old one.

We’ve been listening to everyone’s thoughts on our new timesheet UI change, and we’d like to say two things:

First, our sincere apologies for not providing a better heads up about this forthcoming change. It was definitely not our intent to surprise our users. You can rest assured that this will be the last time that a big change like this will catch you off guard.

Secondly, we’ve made a quick update to the daily timesheet just now so you can hit “Enter” in the notes field to submit the entry, or hit “Shift-Enter” to get a line break. This should revert the behavior back to the way it was with the added benefit of doing multi-line notes.

We’re continuing to listen to your feedback and we are most interested in making Harvest better and easier for you to use. Feel free to continue to let us know what you think.

Giving Harvest managers the choice of interface paradigms is the best approach, as ross suggests.

Please give us a choice via the admin. This UI is no improvement! Different fontsizes :-(, fields not in line and lack of overview. We like the former UI because it intuitivity and overview.

As far as the timesheet ui is concerned we were disappointed that there were no new functions like:
- Calculated timeconsumption by just entering a start and stop time.
- Separate referencefield as part of an timeentry. This field we need to group and sort the invoice. Not a bigger textfield! Harvest must become smarter.

I’m missing the timer animation too. +1 for that to return!

Me too — I want the timer animation back.

Wow – does anyone like the new UI?

I’m surprised it was foisted upon us and am glad to see that Danny noticed.

Please use a BETA feature (a la a big search firm you may know) to get user feedback before flipping the switch.

Also, did I miss the blog post explaining what was wrong with the old look?

Avatar

hi guys, i kind of like the new look, and i don’t care about the animation. but i am finding it difficult to tell which item is currently being timed. this is especially hard when i go back to a task i was working on earlier in the day, start the timer and then go off to do my work. when i return to turn off the timer, it takes a lot longer than it needs to to find out which button to push. a simple color difference on the running timer button would be a big help.

thanks so much — love, love, love harvest!

I posted about this in the Town Square — but I agree with many of the above. I don’t care for the new look, and I think its more difficult to use.

And lacking the timer animation? Bad.

Today i processed the last week. Can somebody explain the benefits of the new input screen for the notes? I’m constantly working to remove hard returns. We prefer the simpler version, unless benefits are still to come…

Hey all, thanks for the feedback, we really appreciate it.

We actually will have a blog post coming out shortly, so that we can explain all of the changes, and the reasons for them. Thanks for your patience – we will get that out asap.

in the meantime, we have indeed brought the stopwatch timer animation back (we’re still tweaking it, we know it looks a bit fast right now), so thanks for letting us know that it’s important to you.

We will continue to tweak the new Timesheet design, so thanks for the feedback, and please feel free to keep it coming.
