Paypal integration
hi folks,
the automatic paypal link included in the invoice is great, and we love getting money minutes, hours, or a few days after we send the bill (as opposed to a month later), but there’s one problem. because we have a business paypal account, we lose some of the invoice amount in paypal transaction fees. historically we have asked clients who want to pay with paypal to assume that cost, and adjusted their invoices to reflect the fee. this is all done by hand, so it’s a headache.
it would be super cool if we could insert a step in the payment process that a) calculated the fees and b) added them to the invoice if the client chose to pay with this method.
my solution in the meantime is probably going to be to add a default line item in every invoice that calculates the paypal fee and tells the client to subtract it if they are NOT paying with paypal. or something like that. it’s a cludge. or just not offering the paypal option.
thanks for considering!
susie.
Thanks for posting this, Susie. We also had a discussion about how to approach Paypal and decided upon this fix for now, but would love to have an add-fee option through Harvest.
Thanks for letting us know @susie, and thanks all for the feedback. This is a feature on our list for the future – we’ve noted the interest!
I’d like to add my vote to have harvest automatically add on a percentage to account for payments by paypal. At the moment, using paypal is not feasible because I can’t absorb the fees and don’t want the extra admin – but I’d love to start using paypal.
Thanks
Hi Christiana- Thanks for the feedback. I’ve made a note that you would like there to be a way for PayPal fees to be reflected in invoices. Cheers!
+1 for this, I’ve been eating the fees, but would be great if I didn’t have to, my Harvest account would then easily pay for itself!
Agreed I am not using Paypal fo this reason. Fees to high and don’t want to have to charge clients for using that payment method.
Would prefer eway integrations.
thanks Kaz
ACTUALLY, it’s against PayPal’s TOS to charge surcharges like this — and also against the TOS of several major credit card companies — so it’s probably not advisable for Harvest to build credit card surcharges of any kind into their system. Just to be on the up and up. (And no, I don’t work for any of these companies; it’s just something I looked into recently. :)
According to their TOS:
“4.5 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge and is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions.”
I would like to propose a twist on this. Instead of having the fees paid by the client, I would just like to see a method by which the fees could be recorded as an expense based on the client information in the invoice.
