Merge Projects

I’d like to be able to merge projects. Sometimes, I have a duplicate because of the Basecamp API import issues, or I don’t end up liking the hierarchy I was building with a client, so I want to merge the projects so that I can maintain the hours.

Seconded. I have many admins on our account, and they sometimes create projects and log tasks under them without checking whether a the project already exists.

I don’t want to lose tasks, so I can’t archive duplicate projects.

I also could really use this feature… we’re constantly re-organizing projects and it would make life a LOT easier if we could combine things!

Hi @Squared Eye, @selene, and @tgosse – First, sorry this post hasn’t gotten any love from us yet! Don’t know how it slipped under the radar.

Second, How would you see a feature like this working? If people could merge projects, what information would you keep from which project? How would we determine that? Any insight into how you’d like this to work for you would be very helpful.

I imagine a review process of the information that’s about to be merged, and then a selection of (this, that, or both) to be merged.

To merge projects, I assume the priority is to move already recorded hours from one project to another? Thinking about how this kind of feature could work, what about providing more editing options within the Detailed Time Report? This would catch a number of use cases, not just merging projects. For example sometimes I also want to bulk change tasks e.g. if they have been wrongly logged.

You can change both project and task for an entry using the Timesheet. But this has to be done individually for each entry, and you can only find entries by date. I workaround this by creating a Detailed Time Report in one window for reference, then opening Timesheet in another, finding each task one by one and editing it. This is fiddly, and tedious if you need to edit lots of entries.

What I would really like is to be able to edit tasks from the Detailed Time Report, ideally including a bulk change option – similar to marked as invoiced/uninvoiced.

UI ideas might include:
- edit-in-place for the entries within the report
- checkboxes to select entries for bulk changes, with options to “change status / change project / change task / change person” etc…
